On 7 May 1945, two days after the German surrender, German soldiers caused a bloodbath among the crowds celebrating the surrender in Dam Square. They shot at the Amsterdammers, killing some 20 people and injuring another 119. Willem Leijns, a photographer, had set up his camera on a tripod in order to photograph the liberation. When the guns began firing, he pressed the button of his Leica twice.

I photocopied drawings I made onto acetate transparencies and arranged them to get the layout I was after. The outcome was again photocopied and then I used ink for the red details...
